The Pottery Starter Course
Day/Time: Mondays 10:00-12:00
Dates: 19.1.26 – 9.2.26
This starter course will be an enjoyable, friendly 4 week beginners’ course to help students further their learning. Skills taught will pave the way for further learning on the follow on 6 week developer course.
Participants will:
- Learn and practise basic pottery techniques (e.g. coil, pinch, slab)
- Create simple pottery pieces using hand-building methods
- Understand basic tools, materials, and safe working practices
- Gain confidence in working creatively and sharing with others
- Reflect on the personal benefits of creative activity for mental well-being
- Identify progression opportunities, such as further creative courses or volunteering
The Pottery Developer Course
Day/Time: Mondays 10:00-12:00
Dates: 23.2.26 – 30.3.26
Further your pottery skills following the introductory Starter course.
Participants will:
- Deepen learners’ skills in hand-building pottery and creative techniques
- Develop confidence, focus, and self-expression through advanced projects
- Enhance wellbeing through sustained, purposeful creative activity
- Support independent practice and next steps in learning or volunteering
The Pottery Enhancer Course
Day/Time: Mondays 1pm-4pm
Dates: 19.1.26 – 16.3.26
This 8 week (3 hours sessions) is suitable for learners who have completed the previous Starter and Developer courses at Heads Up Somerset or who have already learned basic skills in pottery.
Participants will:
- Build on existing pottery skills through more complex and self-directed projects
- Create a self-directed pottery project using a range of advanced hand-building techniques (e.g. combining slab, coil, surface decoration)
- Increase creative problem-solving and technical confidence
- Participate in feedback sessions and use reflective practice to evaluate their work.
- Discuss and identify realistic progression routes, such as advanced creative learning, volunteering, exhibiting, or starting a creative enterprise
- Reflect on how the course has contributed to their mental well-being, confidence, and motivation to move forward
Our courses are FREE to Somerset residents who can evidence that their annual income is below £25k or in receipt of benefits. This is important to note as we are targeting people who may face challenges financially or with health and well-being. For learners who are not eligible for free courses, there will be a charge.
