Go Outdoors

Our Gardening sessions are held 10:30 – 12:30, 1:00 – 3:00, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Our organic kitchen garden gives us the chance to work outside on different seasonal projects.  Clients learn how to sow, plant, care for and harvest a wide range of vegetables, herbs and other plants.  We have a vegetable garden, raised beds, greenhouse, polytunnel, wildlife area and herb garden.  In addition, there is a pond, water feature and benches, so that everyone at Heads Up can enjoy the peace, tranquility and beautiful views from our garden.

The therapeutic effects of horticulture are well-documented and gardening has long been used as a healing medium for a range of mental health issues. Horticultural work, apart from providing its own intrinsic benefits, enables skills to be learnt which can be used to obtain employment.  All of these effects help self-esteem and wellbeing.

“I find being outdoors benefits me in many ways. The group dynamic is good for social interaction. Being with people is important to me, it gives me self-worth and provides a safe, non-judgmental space.”
